If we truly believe to value our own self, we must first treasure and cherish the people who are around us.
Dengyo Daishi (Saicho) has once stated, "Forgive the faults of others with an open mind. Actively serve the people in society. These are the ultimate form of benevolence that thinks of others."
Also, from the Mahaapraj~naapaaramitaa-`saastra (Chidoron),
there is a quote which stated, "The trees with tasty fruits will naturally
gather birds."
As a tree with tasty fruits naturally gathers birds, for us humans, if we think of other people's happiness first, the people will naturally come to us.
If we always wish for others happiness and even forget ourselves enough to wish for others happiness, without knowing and before we are even aware of it, we are already reached the state of happiness.
This is the royal road to our happiness.
